"Shenzhen Bay" Sets Sail to the Future with Unremitting Efforts
Spring returns to the earth and everythinglooks fresh. With the joy of harvest and the dream of development, we are about to usher in the Year of the Tiger. On the eve of the Spring Festival, I would like to extend my best wishes and New Year greetings on behalf of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory to all the working staff and those from all walks of life who concern, support and promote the development of our laboratory!
Time serves as the best witness. In 2021, we always adhered to the concept of "based on Shenzhen, problem-orientation, talents gathering and development supporting", explored and implemented a new national system of scientific research in accordance with the "Four Orientations”. Guided by the collaborative solutions to major scientific problems in life and health, we took the IT+BT integration and interdisciplinary research as the characteristics to focus on the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of critical diseases such as tumors, neurodegenerative and infectious diseases. We have carried out some basic and original researches in the fields of disease prediction, drug development, medical imaging, auxiliary diagnosis and treatment with very satisfactory achievements.
Looking back our past experience, we have achieved great fruits due to our unremitting efforts: more than 700 international talents, more than 90 research teams, more than 100 academicians, Yangtze River scholars, excellent youth as well as other high-level talents have been "attracted to the Bay”; about eight of the Top 10 platforms have been launched to meet the needs of the Laboratory itself and open to the society for sharing, more than 30 universities, hospitals, medical institutions and enterprises have been united to “conduct researches in the Bay”; more than 560 academic papers have been published, more than 100 invention patents have been applied, about 68 vertical projects at state-level and province-level as well as 36 national projects, including 16 national talent projects and 3 national key research programs, have been “implemented in the Bay”.
Looking forward to the future, we are fully confident to make more fruitful achievements. The Molecular Simulations (SPONGE) is expected to replace or even surpass the traditional molecular simulations in the world today, so as to completely get rid of the threat of the "bottle neck”; some projects such as anti-coronavirus small molecule oral medicine, innovative mRNA vaccines and broad-spectrum anti-coronavirus ACE2-Ig recombinant proteins have been promoted to clinical practice; the initiative method of RNA Backbone Torsion and Pseudotorsion Angle Prediction has unveiled the prelude to accurate prediction; a large number of innovative drug development projects have been carried out in an orderly manner, so that it is expected to achieve industrial transfer in the next few years, provide a stable supply of new drugs for the biomedical industry in Shenzhen and the Greater Bay Area, and enhance the ability to create economic values. The postdoctoral workstation has been approved and a large number of outstanding talents are being recruited and trained. The Phase II of the Laboratory transition site has been delivered for operation and the application plan of permanent site has been approved. Our home in the Bay will be greatly expanded with more family members in the future! At the “watchtower” of time to farewell to the past and welcome the future, the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory with a history of three years is marching towards the future in high spirit!
The trickles will finally flow into the sea and we are determined to dedicate the youth to the Greater Bay. Looking back to the exciting moments in 2021, we can see the contributions by every employee which pushed the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory to set sail against the winds and waves; reviewing all the dedications in 2021, we can find the unremitting efforts by everyone which became an eternal moment of glory for Shenzhen Bay people to continue the brilliant progress.
A boat is doomed with more violent torrents in the middle of river and a man has to face steeper road on the halfway up the hill. While celebrating the harvest, we should also realize the coexistence of challenges and opportunities as well as difficulties and hopes. During the critical development of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, we call on all the staff to get united for more innovations and struggles. Every voice is an echo of the times and every goal is a yearning for a better life. In the coming Year of the Tiger, we sincerely hope that everyone can integrate their "small voices" and "small goals" with the "big chorus" and "big goals" of the development of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, so that we can join hands to create a better future, strive to build Shenzhen Bay Laboratory into a world-class highland with scientific and technological innovation, and provide strong support for the development of biomedical industry and clinical medicine in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
We should take advantages of the strong wind to accumulate momentum so as to conquer the tides with pride! There’s no end for the scientific and technological innovation; time and tide waits for no man. Let us make the plan to create and advance into the future with the spirit of self-sacrifice, the courage of innovation, the ambition of constancy and the vigorous enthusiasm, so as to continue a new chapter in the construction and development of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory!
