April 16, SZBL and the Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech) signed an agreement to join hands in developing an institute for clinical translational research, bringing complementary expertise to make scientific impacts in biomedical discovery.

WU Yun-Dong, Executive Vice Director of SZBL and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and CHEN Shiyi, President of SUSTech and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences delivered remarks on the signing ceremony. Attending the ceremony also including YANG Zhen, Director of Institute of Chemical Biology and BayRay Innovation Center of SZBL; TU Huan, Vice Director of SZBL; ZHANG Xinhao, Assistant to Director of SZBL; LI Zigang, Deputy Director of Pingshan Translational Medicine Center of SZBL; ZHANG Dongxiao, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs of SUSTech; WANG Pengfei, Member of Presidential Executive Council and Director of the Preparatory Office of Affiliated Hospitals of SUSTech; and XING Mingzhao, Member of Presidential Executive Council and Dean of the School of Medicine of SUSTech.

Speaking on the occasion, WU Yun-Dong said that SZBL is focusing on making biological advancement in terms of national strategic demands. The laboratory is dedicated to convening talents and resources for making biological-inspired innovation and spurring solutions to the scientific needs around bio-information, biomedicine and medical engineering. He continued to extend expectation that this collaboration with SUSTech would lead to bigger impact in growing biomedical and translational medicine sectors in the Greater Bay Area and even China as a whole with joint commitment from both parties in scientific facility development and professional talent nurturing.

On giving his remarks, CHEN Shiyi voiced agreement that SZBL is taking a crucial role in the development of the Greater Bay Area. The laboratory’s highlight to life sciences and biomedicine is strongly aligned with the strategic blueprint of the Greater Bay Area. CHEN Shiyi specially pointed out the consistent progression of SUSTech in developing the School of Medicine as well as the university’s affiliated hospitals, attaching great importance to this university-wide endeavors. He was looking forward to this collaboration with SZBL, which will foster synergistic engagements to nurture professional talents, support scientific discovery and address global concerns in health and life.
SZBL will move ahead with partnerships to grow research collaborations, attract high-end talents and create opportunities for scientific advancements. It has developed a research consortium including 10 partner institutes in the city of Shenzhen to enhance scientific exchange and personnel attachment. The laboratory will continue to explore models and mechanisms for partnerships, with the goal to build a comprehensive platform in the Greater Bay Area that incubates and strengthens regional and national innovation and discovery in life science and biomedicine.
