The 1st Session of the 1st Academic Committee of the Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) was successfully held on August 1, 2019, in the Talent Center of the Shenzhen Institute of Talent Development. Vice Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, WANG Lixin; Director of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, ZHAN Qimin; Special Advisor of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, LIN Jianhua; Executive Vice Director of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, WU Yun-Dong, as well as Chair of the Academic Committee of SZBL and experts from related fields attended the meeting.

ZHAN Qimin delivered opening remarks for the meeting, expressing his gratitude to all experts and scholars for serving the SZBL Academic Committee. ZHAN Qimin said that the establishment of this committee marked a crucial and strategic step of facilitating the development of SZBL. The Academic Committee would work to oversee academic affairs in SZBL and provide expertise on key projects, scientific resources allocation, talent absorption and cultivation model. Also mentioned in his remarks, ZHAN Qimin encouraged the committee members to pull together their insights and expertise to support SZBL in improving its holistic capability through creating a favorable ambience for academic research; conducting proper in-house evaluation; developing a healthy ecosystem that benefits talent-nurturing and fits with the scientific laws; and meanwhile, facilitating collaboration and enhancing internationalized construction of the SZBL.

The name list of the 1st SZBL Academic Committee was also announced by ZHAN Qimin after the opening section. WANG Lixin, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, ZHAN Qimin, Director of SZBL and LIN Jianhua, Special Advisor to SZBL, jointly awarded Appointment Letter to the newly-appointed committee members. Appointed as the Chair of this committee was ZHANG Mingjie, and as the Vice Chair were HE Chuan, LI Peng and WU Hong. SZBL Executive Vice Director WU Yun-Dong officiated the Session.





After the Appointment Ceremony, SZBL Director ZHAN Qimin and SZBL Executive Vice Director WU Yun-Dong gave reports regarding the overall planning and construction progress of the Laboratory. WANG Lixin, LIN Jianhuan and the committee members listened to the reports.
Based on the strategic landscape of China’s health development and to serve the greater good of developing a global sci-tech innovation hub for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA), SZBL would drive actions to create an inclusive research culture, to galvanize top-tier biomedical research and to deliver industrial contributions to the nation, ZHAN Qimin pointed out in his report. Research and discoveries in SZBL would be full-spectrum and all-rounded with initial focuses on the fields of bio-information, innovative drugs and medical engineering. Through talent absorption and nurturing, SZBL aimed to form 150 research groups within 5 years, with an expecting employment-scale reaches 2,000 individuals by the number, among which 15 to 20 academicians would be included. ZHAN Qimin added.


WU Yun-Dong delivered reports regarding the recent progress achieved by SZBL. Since its establishment on Jan. 6, 2019, SZBL has been endeavoring on cooperation model, talent absorption, mechanics development and so forth. The Laboratory has been bringing together leading scholars from around the globe and has launched construction of high-end scientific platforms. Home-based institutes including Institute of Systems Biology, BayRay Innovation Center and Pingshan Translational Medicine Center (PTMC) had been set up with progress on-going. Moreover, SZBL has taken roles as a co-organizer in numbers of academic events. All these would helped to consolidate SZBL’s intellectual and scientific basis for the future development.

Featured reports pertaining to preliminary and working progress from individual institutes were given during the Session. Also held in this 1-day gathering of the Academic Committee was the panel meeting, during which the Charter of the Academic Committee was reviewed by the committee members, and relevant issues on academic affairs were discussed. ZHANG Mingjie officiated the panel meeting.

The Shenzhen Bay Laboratory Director is responsible for the management of SZBL under the leadership of the Governing Board. In accordance to the Charter of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory, the Academic Committee oversees all academic and research affairs as well as provide consulting and evaluations to SZBL. “The Academic Committee is comprised of top international experts and scholars from the scientific community and shall be appointed by the SZBL Governing Board. The Committee will support the SZBL mission in: development of an academic roadmap; establishment of the scientific platforms; development and implementation of the academic rules; development and evaluation of affiliated institutes and research groups; advising and evaluation of the academic progress of SZBL researchers”.
