On December 27, 2024, the Second Greater Bay Area Advanced Optical Microscopy Imaging Technology Workshop successfully concluded. The week-long event brought together the 14 microscopy experts and over 30 trainees from 20 institutions to explore cutting-edge optical microscopy techniques. The curriculum covered a broad range of topics, including microscope fundamentals, bright-field imaging, confocal microscopy, two-photon microscopy, structured illumination microscopy (SIM), stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM), stimulated emission depletion microscopy (STED), MINFLUX, light-sheet microscopy, fluorescent probes, optical tweezers, atomic force microscopy, multiplex immunofluorescence, stimulated Raman scattering microscopy, and sample preparation.
Peng Xi, Professor at Peking University, Leiting Pan, Professor at Nankai University, Wei Zheng, Researcher at the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology (SIAT), Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Yandong Yin, Researcher at SZBL, presented their research on “Confocal and Two-Photon Microscopy, Structured Illumination Microscopy, and Single-Molecule Localization Super-Resolution Microscopy”.
Professor Jiong Ma from Fudan University, Professor Junle Qu from Shenzhen University, Associate Investigator Cheng Xu from the University of Science and Technology of China, and Senior Engineer Zhenglong Sun from SZBL shared insights into cutting-edge advancements in “Fluorescence Spatiotemporal Modulation Super-Resolution Microscopy, the Fundamentals of Microscopy, Brightfield Imaging, and Fluorescence Imaging”.
Specialized presentations on “Nonlinear Optical Microscopy, Applications of MINFLUX Technology, Tissue Optical Clearing, and Light Sheet Microscopy” were delivered by Professor Aihui Tang from the University of Science and Technology of China, Professor Hongcheng Mai from Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Peng Fei from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and Professor Pu Wang from the Beijing Advanced Innovation Center for Biomedical Engineering.
Additionally, Professor Hai Lei from Zhejiang University, Professor Jie Ma from Sun Yat-sen University, Professor Chengjian Zhao from Sichuan University, Professor Peng Gao from Xidian University, Researcher Hui Li from the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology & Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Researcher Jun Chu from the Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences provided in-depth explanations of techniques and advanced applications such as “Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy Imaging, Super-Resolution and High-Throughput 3D Imaging, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and optical tweezers, Optical Probes and Multi-Label Staining Imaging”.
The workshop drew graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, engineers, and dedicated researchers from 20 institutions across China, including Tsinghua University Shenzhen International Graduate School, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, Jinan University, University of Macau, Shenzhen University, Southern University of Science and Technology, Huazhong Agricultural University, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, the Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology & Engineering of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Jinfeng Laboratory, Guangzhou Laboratory, Zhejiang Chinese Medical University, Zunyi Medical University, and the Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Kunming Medical University.
A total of 36 specialized hands-on training sessions were conducted during the workshop, covering a wide array of advanced techniques. These included point-scanning confocal imaging, two-photon microscopy, structured illumination super-resolution microscopy (SIM), single-molecule localization super-resolution microscopy, light sheet microscopy, bioatomic force microscopy, optical tweezers, fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching (FRAP).
The workshop combined comprehensive theoretical lectures with hands-on practice, allowing participants to gain firsthand experience with state-of-the-art technologies. Through these sessions, attendees not only deepened their understanding of the principles and applications of optical microscopy but also engaged in meaningful discussions and collaborative exchanges.
