Spearheading Vector-borne Pathogen Research
News/2024.05.29

On May 25, 2024, the "2nd Symposium on the Transmission and Control of Vector-borne Pathogens", co-organized by the Vector Insects and Pathogen Interactions Committee of the Entomological Society of China (ESC) and Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL), drew to a successful close at the Academic Lecture Hall on the 3rd Floor of SZBL. The symposium brought together renowned experts and scholars in the field of vector-borne infectious disease research for a series of keynote presentations. Approximately 150 scholars, experts, and industry representatives from across China converged to engage in in-depth discussions on critical issues related to the transmission pathways and control strategies for vector-borne diseases. The Symposium commenced with opening remarks from Professor Ge Feng, President of the Entomological Society of China (ESC), and Secretary Hu Xiaojun of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL). The Symposium commenced with opening remarks from Professor Ge Feng, President of the Entomological Society of China (ESC), and Secretary Hu Xiaojun of Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL). Professor Cheng Gong, Chairman of the Vector Insects and Pathogen Interactions Committee of ESC, provided an overview of the event's organization. The opening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Zhang Xiaoming, a researcher from the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The Symposium featured keynote presentations by Academician Chen Jianping from Ningbo University and Researcher Cao Wuchun from the State Key Laboratory of Pathogen and Biosecurity (SKLPBS). They presented on "Investigating the Interactions Between Vectors, Viruses, and Plants" and "Discovery and Tracing of Vector-Borne Pathogens in the Omics Era".

The Symposium featured in-depth discussions on three main themes: "Vector Biology and Epidemiology of Vector-borne Infectious Diseases", "Interactions between Vector-borne Pathogens and Hosts", and "Control of Vector-borne Infectious Diseases and Plant Diseases". Sixteen senior experts from prominent institutions such as Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Army Medical University, Sun Yat-sen University, Southern Medical University, Hainan University, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Academy of Military Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and SZBL presented their latest research findings.

Against the backdrop of rapid globalization and the looming threat of climate change, vector-borne infectious diseases and plant pests have emerged as formidable challenges to biosecurity and food security, yet effective and safe control measures remain elusive. This symposium facilitated in-depth exchanges on vector-borne pathogen transmission mechanisms, innovative prevention techniques, and response strategies. Experts and scholars shared significant research findings and practical experiences, providing an excellent platform for academic exchange and industry collaboration, thereby promoting future prevention and control efforts.

The Symposium concluded with a closing ceremony hosted by Professor Cheng Gong and a summary by Professor Li Yi. Professor Li commended the innovative content of the conference, noting the significant progress and achievements in vector-borne pathogen research. He emphasized the need for enhanced innovation and scientific cooperation to address the major challenges posed by vector-borne pathogens to human health and agricultural production. Looking ahead, Professor Li also expressed great anticipation for the 3rd Symposium on the Transmission and Control of Vector-borne Pathogens, which will serve as a platform for experts and scholars to reconvene and further advance research on vector-borne pathogens.
