On August 20, Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) convened a meeting comprised by academicians, experts and government officials to discuss and advise a variety of topics regarding the laboratory’s planning and strategic development.
The meeting was successfully held at the Shenzhen Institute for Talent Development. Attending the meeting were CHENG Jinpei, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and former Minister of China’s Ministry of Science and Technology; ZHANG Jing’an, Member of International Eurasian Academy of Sciences (IEAS), Vice President of IEAS and Chairman of China Society of Science Reform; LIU Ke, Foreign Member of Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering and Dean of School of Innovation and Entrepreneurship, SUSTech; LI Shipeng, Member of IEAS and Executive Dean of Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society; QIU Xuan, Vice-chairman of Science, Technology and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality; and SUN Huaming, Deputy Director of Office of Policy Research of CPC Shenzhen. SZBL leadership as well as other department supervisors attended the meeting. SZBL Director ZHAN Qimin chaired the meeting.
At the meeting, the attending individuals and parties heard report by SZBL Executive Vice Director WU Yun-dong detailing the developments of the laboratory, and shared insight and advice for the strategic roadmap of SZBL. The meeting made points that the laboratory should continue benchmarking national demands in science while exploring new mechanisms and identifying goals the best serve its missions in talent acquisition, scientific research, collaboration, and industrial transformation.
Science, Technology and Innovation Commission Vice-chairman QIU Xuan specifically advised on topics pertaining to strategic direction. She suggested that the laboratory to keep track of emerging public health problems and infectious diseases, and foster a development model which integrates scientific discovery, invention and industrial transformation. She also spoke about the need for extending cross-community cooperation and absorbing trans-disciplinary talents. CPC Shenzhen Policy Research Office SUN Huaming and other attendees advised on improving original innovation, exploring new approaches for scientific innovation and related topics.
SZBL Director ZHAN Qimin expressed gratitude for the support and advice from relevant parties. He pointed out that future development of SZBL will be expanding innovative paths for creating an institute with new mechanisms that help map greater industry landscape, increase talent attraction, improve cross-sector connections and shape good ecosystem for our science workforce to engage and grow. Director ZHAN also hoped that SZBL will continue active response to both opportunities and challenges while leveraging its scientific strengths to bolster the biomedical development in Shenzhen, the Greater Bay Area and China as a whole.
