On November 14, Shenzhen Guangming District People's Government and Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) signed a memorandum of cooperation at the 2019 China Hi-Tech Fair. The two parties intend to bring together complementary strengths and resources to closely cooperate on the construction of the comprehensive national science center in Shenzhen, powering the march of Shenzhen as a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics. The memorandum signifies a milestone for SZBL, who will base its future home in the Guangming District according to this document.
Presenting at the signing ceremony were WANG Lixin, Vice Mayor of the Shenzhen Municipal People's Government; WANG Hongbin, Secretary of the Guangming District Committee of the Communist Party of China of Shenzhen; LIU Sheng, Mayor of the Guangming District of Shenzhen; and SZBL leadership including ZHAN Qimin and TU Huan.

WANG Lixin, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, delivered remarks at the ceremony. He pointed out that being what the Shenzhen Government kept endeavoring throughout the years, scientific development and basic science in particular, have been an important engine of innovation to the city. WANG Lixin expressed anticipation towards the construction of the comprehensive national science center, saying that the center be built to support Shenzhen with more abundance for science, innovation and productivity. WANG Lixin also encouraged scientists and sci-tech professionals in Shenzhen to take on higher scientific goals, and to collectively promote Shenzhen's competency in making original innovation.

During the ceremony, WANG Hongbin, Mayor of Guangming District of Shenzhen, said that the District is undertaking a mission to build a new northern center in Shenzhen and a home to a global-leading science hub. The joining of SZBL to the construction of the comprehensive national science center represented firmer steps for us to realize our mission, WANG added.

ZHAN Qimin, Director of SZBL, echoed his speech with Mr. WANG Lixin and Mr. WANG Hongbin. He spoke about the laboratory's mission in engaging the construction of the comprehensive national science center, highlighting the expansion of academic and industrial partnerships that co-establish high-end platforms for global biomedical research. Director ZHAN pointed out that the laboratory would continue to strengthen ties with high-level talents with focuses on intellectual absorption, exchange and collaboration. He was also looking forward for this cooperation to attract more major sci-tech programs and create greater potential for technology transformation.
SZBL will take this cooperation with the Guangming District as a historic opportunity to engage in the dual development of the Greater Bay Area and of Shenzhen as a pilot demonstration area. The laboratory will work in synergy with the Guangming District to explore new models in scientific cooperation and develop the comprehensive national science center in Shenzhen, and launch efforts to realize a quantum leap in life science and biomedicine.
