On April 3, Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) launched inauguration ceremony at the National Supercomputing Shenzhen Center. Shenzhen Vice Mayor WANG Lixin, Shenzhen Municipality Secretary LI Tingzhong, Nanshan District Committee Party Secretary WANG Qiang, SZBL Director ZHAN Qimin, Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences WU Yun-Dong, and Shenzhen Science, Technology and Innovation Commission Vice Director ZHONG Hai attended the ceremony and unveiled the inauguration. Mr. WANG Lixin and Mr. ZHAN Qimin delivered remarks respectively on the ceremony.
The inauguration unlocked the stories of SZBL, a newly-established provincial laboratory resides in the heart of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area(GBA). According to the Greater Bay Area Plan issued by the Chinese government, GBA will grow new strengths for emerging industries, advanced manufacturing and modern service through various efforts investing in novel technologies, new industries, new business and new systems. SZBL as a research institute featuring bio-information, biomedicine and biomedical engineering, its mission will be echoing with the theme of the GBA - to develop world-class sciences, and providing support to the GBA.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice Mayor of Shenzhen Municipal People’s Government, WANG Lixin, mentioned that in recent years, the CPC Central and the State Council have been attaching significance to undertake the overall planning on state laboratories and to restructure the state key laboratory system. This is followed by the proactive move of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the CPC and Provincial Government as well as the Shenzhen Municipal Committee of the CPC and Shenzhen Municipality to develop the provincial laboratory complex with a firmly-adhered principle compared to state standards. Since preliminary preparation, SZBL has been giving a better play to the reform and opening-up policy while leveraging its international nature inherited from GBA, aiming to address China’s national needs and lead major breakthroughs to the scientific community via an inclusive and collaborative perspective. WANG Lixin said, the inauguration of SZBL today marked a milestone in the developmental trajectory of the Lab. He also extended expectation towards SZBL, that the Lab gave clearer priority to befit China’s national scientific strategy while convening global top research talents and generating flagship effect in technology innovation; to lead synergistic innovation, to integrate multiple resources, drive ground-breaking research and to nurture reserves for developing state laboratories; to be originally innovative and highly influential with distinctive global presence. Together with local policy support, WANG Lixin wished the Lab to enjoy a better innovation ecosystem and be more effectively facilitated.
Officiating the SZBL inauguration ceremony was LIN Jianhua, the Special Advisor of SZBL and Vice Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the 13rd National People’s Congress. The ceremony was attended by Shenzhen Government officials, delegates from the member institutes of the SZBL Governing Board, representatives from SZBL partner institutes and scholars from relevant universities and scientific institutes.
