Shenzhen Bay Laboratory (SZBL) held the 1st session of Institutes & Centers Joint Meeting on September 7, 2019. The meeting was attended by LIN Jianhua, Special Advisor of SZBL; ZHAN Qimin, Director of SZBL; WU Yun-Dong, Executive Vice Director of SZBL; CHEN Xianmei, Deputy Director of the Office of Basic Research & Infrastructural Platform of the Science, Technology and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality; and representatives from SZBL institutes and centers.

The meeting highlighted the keynote of accelerating the construction of home-based institutes and exploring the favorable model for joint contribution among affiliated partners with discussions featuring work progress, scientific planning, research echelon development and so forth. Consensuses were reached regarding mechanism for ensuring supporting services, integration of advanced resources and models of win-win cooperation.

WU Yun-Dong, Executive Vice Director of SZBL, delivered report during the meeting. He pointed out that in order to build favorable research culture and assemble competitive strengths from relevant parties, SZBL has been exploring new paths for development, with strong alignment to the forefront of bioscience as well as intensive efforts in facilitating the construction - all these would provide a better basis for the laboratory to be fully engaged and contributed to the growth of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Professor GAO Yiqin introduced the management and operation systems of SZBL on the meeting. He emphasized, that the goal for SZBL to become a world-class research institute in the decades going forward had called upon efforts to foster adaptable, synergistic and legally-compliant mechanisms that ensured and strengthened academic freedom.

CHEN Xianmei, Deputy Director of the Office of Basic Research & Infrastructural Platform of the Science, Technology and Innovation Commission of Shenzhen Municipality, said that SZBL should enhance alignment with the newly launched guideline of developing Shenzhen as a pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Under this recent stated central guideline, SZBL needed to advance the planning and structuring for the core area of research, facilitate collaboration with affiliated partners and incrementally, to give the city more impetus in promoting industrial competitiveness and developmental level.

Representatives from SZBL institutes and centers reported on work progress respectively before proceeding to the joint discussion section.
The meeting drew to a close with a concluding remark by ZHAN Qimin, the Director of SZBL. The launch of Shenzhen as pilot demonstration area of socialism with Chinese characteristics and the initiative of the Greater Bay Area Innovation Hub marked a favorable opportunity for SZBL to take proactive role in this historic course of development, ZHAN pointed out. He continued with that SZBL should take every ongoing step to make improvements in operation mechanism, managerial involvement of scientists, talent strategy and so forth to drive SZBL as leading role in the development of the comprehensive national science center in Shenzhen.
